Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” and firmly denied host Maria Bartiromo’s suggestion that he might switch parties, but made it clear he intends to be an “independent voice” within the Democratic caucus.

His comments come amid a growing internal debate among Democrats over whether the party’s use of inflammatory language against Republicans risks escalating political divisions and potentially inciting violence.

“No, I’m not going to switch, but I’m just going to be an independent voice in the Democratic Party,” Fetterman told Bartiromo. He then explicitly criticized those in his party who deploy extreme labels against political rivals. “If you want a Democrat that’s going to call people Nazis or fascists or all these kinds of thing, well, I’m not going to be that guy,” Fetterman asserted. He characterized this rhetoric as “part of the problem in our party.”

The Pennsylvania Senator stressed the importance of principled leadership and following the “truth,” regardless of which political side it originates from. “I would remain independent and follow the truth regardless of whether it comes from a Republican or Democratic voice,” he said, citing his unwavering support for Israel and his opposition to government shutdowns as examples of his independently rooted positions. “And if that puts me as an outlier, that’s where I am,” he continued.

Fetterman is not alone in his concern. Democratic Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has called on the party to restrain members using “completely crazy” and “full of hate” language. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) also pushed back against the most severe comparisons, stating plainly, “Republicans are not Nazis.”

However, the call to temper rhetoric is not unanimous within the party. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) defended his attacks on President Donald Trump, arguing that warning about perceived threats to democracy is both urgent and appropriate, even while acknowledging a rise in political violence.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) also stood by her comparisons of Trump to Nazi Germany, insisting that calling him a “wannabe Hitler” is justified and does not equate to inciting violence.

The intensifying disagreement highlights a significant fissure within the Democratic Party as it navigates a highly charged political landscape, attempting to balance sharp criticisms of opponents with concerns over deepening polarization.
