A rift has emerged between two prominent Democrats after Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman publicly rebuked California Governor Gavin Newsom during a Wednesday appearance on the “All-In Podcast.” The dispute centers on Newsom’s response to YouTuber Nick Shirley, who recently published an investigation alleging over $170 million in taxpayer fraud within California’s social service programs.
The conflict began following Shirley’s Monday video release, which showed him visiting various daycare centers, hospices, and adult care facilities.
In the footage, Shirley confronted individuals at these sites, questioning the flow of public funds and claiming that “fraudsters” were exploiting the elderly and disabled. In response, Governor Newsom’s official press office account on X (formerly Twitter) posted a cartoon depicting Shirley at a daycare asking to see children.
Senator Fetterman characterized the governor’s social media response as a “smear,” suggesting the post unfairly implied Shirley was a pedophile. During the podcast, Fetterman argued that the focus should remain on the allegations of financial waste rather than personal attacks.

“Why can’t you celebrate any journalist or any activist doing that?” Fetterman asked. “You want to disagree, but to imply that someone in one of the most gross kinds of terms like that—it’s like, hey, shouldn’t we agree, eliminate all the waste?”
Fetterman further emphasized that political affiliation should not shield a state from scrutiny regarding financial mismanagement. He stated that when fraud is identified, leaders should acknowledge the problem regardless of whether it occurs in a Democratic or Republican state.
Newsom’s press office has defended its stance by pivoting the focus toward federal systems. On Tuesday, the office posted that Shirley’s findings actually highlighted potential issues within the federal Medicare system. The governor’s team also noted that Newsom had previously imposed a moratorium on new hospice licenses in 2021 to combat industry issues.
Shirley, who has previously investigated similar allegations involving Somali daycares in Minnesota, maintained in his video that the public is being defrauded.
“It’s time we stand up to these fraudsters,” he said. While the governor’s office continues to point toward federal oversight and previous policy changes, Fetterman’s public criticism highlights a rare moment of friction between two of the Democratic Party’s most visible figures over the handling of independent oversight.
