Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman Breaks Ranks As Senate Braces For Showdown On War Powers

Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman confirmed Wednesday that he will once again split from his party to oppose a war powers resolution aimed at halting U.S. military strikes in Iran.

The announcement came shortly after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) scheduled a vote on the measure for next week, citing a need for Congress to reassert its constitutional authority.

Appearing on Fox News’s “Hannity,” Fetterman framed his decision as a matter of military support and national security.

“We have to stand with our military to allow them to accomplish the goals of Epic Fury,” Fetterman told host Sean Hannity, referring to the ongoing operation. He added that he viewed Iran as the “world’s leading terrorism underwriter” and argued that supporting the military should be a point of bipartisan agreement.

The upcoming vote follows a series of similar resolutions introduced last month by Democratic Senators Tim Kaine (VA), Cory Booker (NJ), and Chris Murphy (CT).

While those measures sought to mandate congressional authorization for military action against Iran, they ultimately failed. Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against those previous efforts.

Conversely, Senator Rand Paul (KY) was the sole Republican to support them, criticizing President Trump for authorizing strikes without a formal nod from Congress.

The legislative push arrives during a period of high tension. Although the Trump administration entered into a tenuous two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, the agreement remains fragile.

Iranian officials have already accused Israel of violating the terms by continuing strikes in Lebanon. Before the pause in hostilities, President Trump issued a stark warning, stating that a “whole civilization will die” in Iran if conflict escalated.

Senator Schumer emphasized that the resolution is necessary to check the President’s unilateral power. “All of this happens when one man, especially a man acting as unhinged as Donald Trump, has unchecked power to wage war,” Schumer told reporters.

He argued that the President’s rhetoric has created a dangerous environment where the “entire world holds its breath” regarding the next escalation. Despite this push for a unified Democratic front, Fetterman’s stance ensures the resolution will face bipartisan opposition on the Senate floor.
