Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman isn’t sweating a potential primary challenge from his left flank. In fact, he’s virtually rolling out the red carpet for one.
The Democratic Senator responded with open mockery on Tuesday after the Working Families Party (WFP) threatened to run a candidate against him. The dispute erupted after the Pennsylvania WFP took to X to blast Fetterman for voting to pass a budget bill that reopened the government. The progressive organization accused the senator of having “once again sold out working Pennsylvanians.”
Fetterman, appearing on Fox News’ “The Story,” dismissed the threat as politically helpful rather than harmful.
“Ooh, ooh, oh, I hope, promise. I hope so,” Fetterman joked during the segment. “Because I guarantee whoever they put up, they’re going to make me look the reasonable guy that’s going to work with both sides together and find a way for Pennsylvania.”

The friction highlights the widening gap between Fetterman and the progressive movement that helped boost his 2022 Senate run. Since taking office, the hoodie-wearing legislator has frequently bucked the far-left wing of the Democratic Party on hot-button issues ranging from immigration and foreign policy to his vocal criticism of the government shutdown strategy.
Fetterman pushed back hard against the WFP’s characterization of his voting record, specifically defending the recent budget vote as a necessity for social safety nets.
“And now it’s an absolute lie,” Fetterman said regarding the “sold out” accusation. “Voting to keep our government open, that was a vote to make sure that 42 million Americans get their SNAP. And now we’re going to pay all these people, like the military and the Capitol Police and all of those folks now, too.”
He framed the vote not as a concession, but as pragmatism. “My point, it’s like I’ve been on the side of common sense and I’ve always [going to] put our country [before] party. And I think most people now realize that shutting our government down was wrong.”
While Fetterman has drawn the ire of fellow Democrats for his independent streaks—including a more diplomatic approach toward President Donald Trump and criticisms of Democratic leadership for not opening the government sooner—he maintains that he isn’t going anywhere. Despite the rumors and the infighting, the Senator has repeatedly stated he has no intention of leaving the Democratic Party.
