In a blunt assessment of his own party’s current trajectory, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) appeared on Fox News Friday to warn that radical elements and foreign-aligned groups are overshadowing traditional Democratic values like labor and union advocacy.
Speaking with host Jesse Watters during a segment on nationwide May Day demonstrations, the Pennsylvania senator did not hold back, describing a shift toward socialist and communist ideologies that he believes could lead the party astray.
The conversation began with Watters questioning the threat of modern communist movements, to which Fetterman lamented the persistence of “bad ideas” that refuse to die.

He specifically pointed to organizations like Code Pink, alleging they maintain strong ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and are receiving outside financial backing. Fetterman noted the paradox of the situation, stating it was “ironic” that anti-billionaire protests are often funded by billionaires.
Fetterman’s critique turned local as he cited the political climate in Maine, specifically mentioning Graham Platner. He noted that Platner, an “avowed communist,” is set to be a Democratic nominee, which Fetterman characterized as evidence of a socialist resurgence within the party’s ranks.
The senator described a “marriage” of various far-left causes—including anti-ICE movements and pro-Palestinian protests—that have merged into what he called an “orgy of socialism.”
While the comment drew a laugh from Watters, Fetterman maintained a serious tone regarding the impact on the party’s core identity. He argued that the focus of May Day should remain on labor unions and workers’ rights, rather than the “mess” he currently sees unfolding.

“I am an absolutely, I’m a proud pro-union Democrat,” Fetterman said, contrasting his stance with the “worst impulses” he believes his party is currently failing to resist.
His remarks highlight a growing friction between the party’s moderate, labor-focused wing and the increasingly vocal progressive and socialist factions gaining traction in various state-level races.
