PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – The Pasco Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to residents regarding a surge in fraudulent text messages from criminals posing as representatives of the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
According to authorities, these digital impersonators are targeting citizens with increasing frequency in an attempt to siphon away personal information and bank balances.
The scam typically begins with a text message that appears to be an official notice regarding a license status, vehicle registration, or an outstanding fine.
These messages often include a sense of urgency, pressure for immediate payment, or links to spoofed websites designed to look like legitimate government portals.

Once a victim enters their credit card or Social Security information, the scammers can use that data for identity theft or unauthorized financial withdrawals.
Law enforcement officials are reminding the public that the Florida DMV does not operate through text-based solicitations. “Please note, the DMV will never contact you via text message demanding payment,” the Pasco Sheriff’s Office stated in their community alert.
To stay safe, deputies recommend that residents never click on links from unknown numbers and avoid providing any sensitive data over the phone or via text. If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from a government agency, the safest course of action is to ignore the text and contact the department directly through an official phone number found on a verified government website.
The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone who has fallen victim to these tactics or received a suspicious text to report the incident to local authorities immediately.
