Pinellas County Rescinds Mask Mandates Following DeSantis’ Executive Order

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla.- Pinellas County announced on Tuesday it is rescinding face mask requirements following Governor Ron DeSantis’ executive order and announcement on Monday. 

The following changes to the mandate will take effect immediately: 

  • COVID-19 ordinance requiring face coverings and certain safety protocols at business locations is rescinded.
  • The order requiring safety plan requirements for large events is also rescinded.
  • May 11th Board of County Commissioners meeting will no longer include State of Local Emergency and public hearing on the ordinance requiring face coverings.
  • Private businesses and organizations may still require face masks or any other safety protocols as part of their business operations.

Pinellas County School’s Board masks and social distancing protocols remain in effect in shools through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. 

In a statement, Pinellas County Schools said, “As we finish the 2020-21 school year, Pinellas County Schools remains committed to the health, wellness and academic needs of our students, families and staff. On Monday, May 3, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Orders 21-101 and 21-102 regarding local COVID-19 policies. “

“We received official clarification from the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) that these Executive Orders DO NOT apply to school districts.  Specifically, the clarification from FDOE states that neither EO-21-101 nor EO-21-102 impact any school district’s policies for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. All Pinellas County Schools health and safety protocols remain in effect, including the district’s policy regarding face coverings.”
