Pinellas County Traffic Alert: Commuters Face Heavy Lane Closures May 10-16

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Pinellas County drivers are looking at a busy week on the roads as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) kicks off a fresh round of maintenance and construction projects starting Sunday, May 10.

The District 7 schedule, which runs through May 16, spans nearly every major artery in the county, ranging from overnight bridge work on the Skyway to around-the-clock closures on Curlew and Gulf to Bay.

The I-275 corridor will see significant activity, starting with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Maintenance crews have scheduled nightly lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. throughout the entire week. Further north on I-275, southbound lanes between Roosevelt Boulevard and 54th Avenue North will be restricted Sunday through Thursday nights, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

U.S. 19 and Alt U.S. 19 are also hitting the list with a mix of day and night work. Daytime drivers on U.S. 19 between Nebraska and Tarpon avenues should expect delays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. all week.

On the alternate route, flagging operations will be in effect between Meres Boulevard and Tampa Road overnight, while the stretch from E. Curlew Place to St. Andrews Drive will see 12-hour daytime flagging sessions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Long-term projects continue to impact local traffic patterns. Eastbound SR 60 (Gulf to Bay Boulevard) remains under 24-hour lane closures near the Bayshore area through the spring.

Similarly, eastbound SR 586 (Curlew Road) is restricted 24 hours a day between McMullen Booth and Tampa roads, a pattern expected to last through late 2026. Drivers crossing the 62nd Avenue S. Bridge over Maximo Channel will encounter a temporary traffic signal managing two-way traffic over the bridge, which stays in effect through the summer.

Other notable nightly closures include East Bay Drive between U.S. 19 and Belcher Road, and 4th Street North from Gandy Boulevard to I-275. These projects generally wrap up by 6 or 7 a.m. each morning to clear the way for the daily commute. While these schedules are subject to change based on weather, motorists are encouraged to plan for extra travel time or seek alternate routes throughout the week.
