PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Drivers navigating North Pinellas should prepare for a shift in their daily routine starting Monday. Pinellas County is kicking off an intersection improvement project at East Lake Road and Tarpon Woods Boulevard, a move intended to eventually ease the chronic congestion in the area.
From April 20 through April 24, the dedicated right-turn lane for those traveling northbound on East Lake Road will be shut down. To keep things moving, the county is repurposing the right through lane as a temporary turn lane into the Tarpon Woods communities.
These restrictions will be in place daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as crews work to avoid the heaviest rush-hour windows.
It isn’t just drivers who will need to stay sharp; pedestrians and cyclists will face some changes, too. The crosswalks on the southeast corner are closing while crews remove the existing traffic island.

The county has confirmed that temporary paths and markings will be set up to guide anyone traveling on foot or by bike through the work zone.
Pinellas County Public Works officials stated they will monitor the situation closely and adjust signal timing as needed to prevent major backups. This five-day window marks the first phase of a larger plan to add a third northbound lane through the intersection.
For now, the advice for locals is straightforward: leave a few minutes early, keep an eye out for new signage, and exercise extra caution while navigating the temporary lane shifts.
