TAMPA, Fla. – Downtown Tampa is about to get a little loud and a lot more colorful. Today, members of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla are heading straight for the mayor’s office with one goal in mind. They want the key to the city.

It is all part of the big tradition leading up to the 2026 Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest. The pirates plan to arrive on their decorated floats and “raid” Mayor Jane Castor’s office. Once they have made their presence known, the group will move to Lykes Gaslight Park. A theatrical meeting is set to happen there at noon.

This event is the official kickoff for the festivities. It sets the stage for the massive Gasparilla Invasion and Parade of the Pirates coming up this Saturday, January 31.

If you are working downtown or just passing through, don’t panic if you hear loud booms. Organizers have issued a noise advisory. The event uses theatrical props, which means simulated cannon fire will likely echo through the streets near the park.

The showdown at noon is a tradition where the pirates demand the city surrender. It is a chance for locals to see the Krewe up close before the big crowds arrive on the weekend. Keep an eye out for pirate flags.

The invasion has officially begun.
