A California mother is under investigation by law enforcement after posting on Facebook in an effort to temporarily rehome her young daughter, according to authorities.
The Chico Police Department launched an inquiry on Thursday, July 23, after receiving multiple reports from community members who spotted the message online.
According to local reporting from KRON, the now-deleted post stated: “Hello looking for a place for my daughter to call home temp! Ideally if you have a daughter close to age she is 7 will be 8 in Dec. We reside (in) chico will be attending school here. Message me for details.”
The post generated significant concern among social media users. One online commenter noted, “Relying on strangers online can put you and your daughter in a vulnerable situation and create risks you may not realize,” KRON reported. Several people who viewed the statement subsequently contacted local law enforcement.
Officers initially attempted to reach the mother, who has not been publicly identified by authorities. When early attempts to contact her were unsuccessful, the case was reassigned to the department’s investigations bureau.
Detectives later located the woman and conducted a welfare check, confirming that her 7-year-old daughter was unharmed.
Following the check, police provided the mother with local support resources and submitted a referral to Butte County Child Services. The Chico Police Department stated that the case will be forwarded to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
In an official statement, the department acknowledged the public’s assistance in bringing the situation to their attention.
“We appreciate everyone who took the time to report the post,” the Chico Police Department said. “Your concern and quick action helped us make contact, ensure the child’s safety, and connect the family with available resources.”
