POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A late-night toss of trash led to felony drug trafficking charges for two people in Polk County early Thursday morning after a deputy spotted them littering.
James Allen Wesley, 58, of Lake Wales, and Staci Nichole Campos, 51, of Seminole, were pulled over around 2:50 a.m. on May 28. A Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputy was patrolling near Rifle Range Road and State Road 60, just south of Wahneta, when they noticed garbage being thrown out of the window of a white 2016 Kia Sonata.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the Kia, identifying Wesley as the driver and Campos as the passenger.
During the stop, deputies discovered baggage containing methamphetamine inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the car uncovered additional amounts of the drug. In total, deputies seized 18.98 grams of methamphetamine.
Both Wesley and Campos were arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center. They have each been charged with first-degree felony trafficking in methamphetamine, third-degree felony tampering with evidence, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
In addition to the criminal charges, both individuals received citations for littering.
