Polk County School’s Open Enrollment For 2026-27 Is Officially Live

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Polk County Public Schools has officially opened the doors for families looking to switch things up for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year. Starting this week, the Controlled Open Enrollment (COE) window is active, giving parents a chance to snag a seat at a public school outside their usual zone.

This statewide program essentially turns the county into an open map, allowing students to apply for any public school—with the exception of magnet programs—provided that the specific campus still has desks available. It is a first-come, first-served style opportunity that hinges entirely on capacity.

If you are looking to make a move, you’ll need to act fast; the district is only accepting these applications through Friday, May 8. Everything is handled digitally, so parents must submit their requests through the Parent Portal.

There are a few logistical hurdles to keep in mind. First, the district does not provide busing for COE students. If you choose a school across town, getting your child there and back is entirely on you.

Additionally, while the list of eligible schools is fairly long, it is limited to those that aren’t already at max capacity. You can find the full, updated list of participating campuses at polkschoolsfl.com/transfer.

For those worried about “losing their spot” elsewhere, district officials confirmed that a COE application won’t mess with any other pending requests.

If you have already applied for a magnet school or a specific career academy, this application stays in its own lane and won’t impact those decisions.

For more details or to troubleshoot the Parent Portal, the district’s Pupil Accounting department is taking calls at 863-519-7600 (option 1).
