POLK COUNTY, FL. – In a statement released on social media, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback Tom Brady made his official announcement that he will be leaving the game.
During a press conference on Tuesday discussing a deputy-involved shooting, that happened overnight, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, an avid football fan, was asked about Tom Brady’s retirement.
“I’ve been watching the Tampa Bay Bucs for a lot of years,” said Judd. “Every time we played New England or anyone else, I’d go, oh my gosh, Tom Brady.”
“He is simply the greatest quarterback of all times. I doubt seriously if anybody will ever match his accomplishments. I was elated when he came to Tampa Bay and brought us a Super Bowl and took us to the playoffs this year,” said Judd.
In the Bucs’ 2020 season opener at New Orleans, Tom Brady became the 19th Week 1 starting quarterback in the team’s history. With his retirement, general manager Jason Licht and coach Bruce Arians will need a 20th.
Over the weekend, multiple media outlets reported that Brady had retired, but no official word came until Tuesday.
ESPN first reported the news that the quarterback was retiring on Sunday, after 22 seasons in the NFL. But Brady, who played for 20 seasons with the New England Patriots, won seven Super Bowl titles, made it official on Tuesday.
In a statement on Tuesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “Tom Brady will be remembered as one of the greatest to ever play in the NFL. An incredible competitor and leader, his stellar career is remarkable for its longevity but also for the sustained excellence he displayed year after year.
“Tom made everyone around him better and always seemed to rise to the occasion in the biggest moments. His record five Super Bowl MVP awards and seven Super Bowl championships set a standard that players will chase for years.
He inspired fans in New England, Tampa and around the world with one of the greatest careers in NFL history. It has been a privilege to watch him compete and have him in the NFL. We thank him for his many contributions to our game and wish Tom and his family all the best in the future.”
