LAKELAND, Fla. – A local dinner outing ended in a bank account nightmare after a Lakeland waitress allegedly stole a customer’s debit card information to fund an $893.88 shopping spree, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office records.
The incident began on April 16, 2026, when a woman and her husband went out for dinner at a Lakeland sports bar. They paid their bill using a debit card. By the next morning, the victim received a string of bank alerts for three unauthorized charges: $600 at the Posh Day Spa in Winter Haven, $93.88 at a Chili’s Bar & Grille in Lakeland, and $200 at the Florida Cosmetic Center.
The victim contacted the Winter Haven day spa and learned that the $600 charge was used to buy six gift cards. While the victim was on the phone with the business, a second line rang. It was a woman named Angela trying to book an appointment using those exact gift cards. The spa did not have any openings, but the business’s caller ID caught the name Angela Borrero.
The spa owner looked up Borrero on social media and shared her photo with the victim. The victim immediately identified the woman in the picture as the waitress who had served her dinner the night before.

A PCSO detective took over the case and contacted the sports bar’s owner. Records showed that Borrero had been hired by the restaurant just nine days before the unauthorized charges took place. The detective later obtained cell phone provider records confirming that the call to the spa came directly from Borrero’s phone.
Angela Borrero, 49, of Lakeland, was already being held at the Polk County Jail on unrelated charges when detectives added the new counts on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. She is now charged with Grand Theft, Scheme to Defraud, Use of ID of Another Person, Fraudulent Use of a Debit Card, and Violation of Probation.
Borrero has a criminal record that includes 20 prior felony convictions and 15 misdemeanor convictions. Her past charges involve Petit Theft, Retail Theft, Grand Theft, Identity Theft, drug offenses, and possession of more than 10 fraudulent checks.
