Record-Breaking Excitement and Sales Fuel Florida’s Educational Future
A wave of lottery fever is sweeping across Florida as the Powerball jackpot has surged to an astounding $1 billion, making it one of the largest prizes in U.S. history. This historic moment comes as the Florida Lottery celebrates its legacy of major wins, having produced more Powerball winners than any other state since joining the game in 2009.
Florida Lottery Secretary John F. Davis highlighted the dual impact of this excitement. “Every Powerball ticket purchased in Florida offers the chance to win big, but more importantly, it helps fund the educational dreams of students across our state,” said Davis.

He noted that the enthusiasm from players directly supports the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, a cornerstone of the state’s educational funding.
The last big Powerball win in the state was a $214.9 million jackpot claimed on May 6, 2024. The state was also one of three to split the world-record $1.586 billion jackpot in January 2016. During the current jackpot run, Florida has continued its winning streak with multiple second-tier, million-dollar prizes.
The astronomical jackpot has driven unprecedented sales, with Floridians purchasing more than 7,000 Powerball tickets every minute leading up to the drawing. The Miami district has led all regions in sales during this cycle, showcasing the widespread participation.

This surge in ticket sales is more than just a quest for riches—it’s a significant boon for education. Since its founding in 1988, the Florida Lottery has contributed over $49 billion to education.
Powerball alone has generated more than $3.16 billion for education in Florida. If the jackpot is claimed, the Florida Lottery is expected to contribute approximately $42.70 million to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund from this drawing alone. This funding directly supports scholarships, with the Bright Futures program having already helped more than 1 million students pursue higher education.
As the excitement builds for the historic drawing, the Florida Lottery reminds all players to play responsibly, emphasizing that every ticket sold plays a vital role in shaping Florida’s future.
