A single Powerball ticket sold at a gas station in western Illinois matched all six numbers Wednesday night to claim a $1 billion jackpot, ending a three-month streak without a top-prize winner.
Illinois Lottery officials confirmed the winning ticket was purchased at a Hy-Vee station in Quincy, located about 100 miles west of Springfield near the Missouri border. The winning numbers drawn Wednesday were 4, 26, 66, 67, and 69, with a Powerball of 9.
State lottery officials have not yet announced whether the ticket holder has come forward to claim the prize.
The grand prize, which totaled $1.04 billion by the time of the drawing, ranks as the eighth-largest in Powerball history. The winner can choose between receiving the full annuity paid out over 29 years or taking a single cash lump-sum payment of $450.5 million before taxes.
Wednesday’s drawing ended a dry spell that began after May 2, when a top prize of $20 million was last hit. Overall odds of matching all six numbers on a $2 ticket are 1 in 292 million.
“Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winner in Illinois,” said Stephen Durrell, chair of the Powerball Product Group and executive director of the Kansas Lottery. “For more than three decades, Powerball has shown that a winning ticket can be sold anywhere the game is played, giving every $2 ticket the chance to change not only a winner’s life, but generations to come.”
While only one ticket hit the main jackpot, several other players earned major payouts. Four tickets sold in Arizona, California, Florida, and North Carolina matched all five white balls to win $1 million each. Another ticket sold in Massachusetts matched the five white balls and doubled its payout to $2 million by using the $1 Power Play feature.
According to game officials, more than 3 million tickets won smaller cash prizes across lower tiers.
The jackpot now resets to $20 million for the upcoming Saturday drawing. The all-time lottery record remains a $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won in California in 2022.
