A Kentucky man faces multiple felony charges after authorities say he violently attacked a pregnant woman, forcing her into an emergency C-section.
Desmond Potts, 31, was arrested Thursday, Aug. 20, following an incident at a Louisville residence, according to arrest citations and court records cited by WDRB.
Investigators said Potts and the victim were involved in an argument when the altercation turned physical. Potts allegedly slammed the woman onto a couch and attempted to punch her while she tried to shield herself.
A 9-year-old child inside the home jumped onto Potts’ back to intervene, but Potts allegedly threw the child off, police reports state.
When the woman attempted to leave the home, Potts took her car keys and phone, pulled a knife, pinned her against a wall, and threatened to kill both her and her unborn twins, according to the investigation.
The 9-year-old attempted to intervene a second time, at which point Potts allegedly pinned the child to the wall before releasing him at the woman’s request.
Police said Potts then dragged the woman into another room, slammed her to the floor, and dragged her down a flight of stairs by her legs.
The victim eventually broke free and contacted emergency services. Hospital staff determined she suffered a ruptured placenta and a lacerated liver, requiring an immediate emergency C-section. The current medical conditions of the woman, the twins, and the 9-year-old child have not been released.
Potts was booked on charges of first-degree assault (domestic violence), first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault (child abuse), third-degree terroristic threatening, and menacing.
A judge set his bond at $100,000. Court records do not indicate whether Potts has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.
