Government Shutdown Looms as Trump Cancels Meeting with Democratic Leaders
President Trump announced on Tuesday that he was canceling a scheduled meeting with top congressional Democrats. The meeting, intended to negotiate a solution for government funding, was set to include Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The deadline to pass a funding extension is October 1.
The president took to Truth Social to explain his decision, stating that after reviewing the demands from the “Minority Radical Left Democrats,” he found a meeting would not be productive.
“After reviewing the details of the unserious and ridiculous demands being made by the Minority Radical Left Democrats in return for their Votes to keep our thriving Country open, I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive,” Trump posted.
The cancellation has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic leaders.
Schumer accused the president of “running away from the negotiating table before he even gets there.” He added that Trump “would rather throw a tantrum than do his job” and would “own the shutdown.”
Jeffries echoed this on X, posting, “Trump Always Chickens Out.” He further accused Republicans of wanting to shut down the government because they are “unwilling to address the Republican healthcare crisis that is devastating America.”
The core of the dispute lies in the Democrats’ demand for concessions, particularly on healthcare, in exchange for their votes to extend government funding.
Republicans, however, have so far insisted on a “clean stopgap funding bill” with no additional provisions. With the Senate needing at least seven Democratic votes to pass a funding measure, the current stalemate puts the first government shutdown since 2019 at high risk.
The looming deadline of October 1 intensifies the pressure on both sides to find a compromise, but with the cancellation of this key meeting, the path forward appears increasingly uncertain.
