President calls the endorsement a “very bad” development for NYC, threatens to withhold federal funds from the city.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Donald Trump reacted strongly to New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s endorsement of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “Liddle’ Communist.”
The President’s post read: “Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has Endorsed the “Liddle’ Communist,” Zohran Mamdani, running for Mayor of New York. This is a rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City. How can such a thing happen? Washington will be watching this situation very closely. No reason to be sending good money after bad! President DJT.”

The post comes a day after Governor Hochul announced her support for Mamdani in a New York Times opinion piece, citing his focus on addressing the city’s affordability crisis.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, won the Democratic primary and is considered the frontrunner in the mayoral race.
President Trump’s warning that “Washington will be watching” and his suggestion of withholding federal funds signals a potential new front in the ongoing political clashes between the federal government and New York’s Democratic leadership.
The President’s post did not specify which funds might be at risk, but the city relies on significant federal aid for a range of services, including transportation and housing.
