Election results from Tuesday’s primary races have solidified the lineup for several high-profile state and federal contests in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Carolina.
Wisconsin Democratic Gubernatorial Primary
In Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley won the Democratic nomination for governor. Crowley secured the nomination in a close contest against state Assemblymember Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist.
The primary served as an ideological test for state Democrats. Crowley, who re-entered the primary race in July following an endorsement from outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers, centered his campaign on moderate political appeal and general election electability.
Hong ran on a progressive platform that included universal childcare, free school meals, and a temporary pause on data center construction.
With his primary victory, Crowley advances to the November general election to face Republican U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, who ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.
Minnesota Top-of-Ticket Primaries
Minnesota voters selected Democratic nominees for both the governor’s office and the U.S. Senate following a primary election where incumbent Governor Tim Walz opted not to seek re-election.
In the Democratic gubernatorial primary, current U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar secured the nomination. Klobuchar entered the governor’s race earlier in the year following Walz’s decision to step down from a re-election bid.
She will face Republican nominee Lisa Demuth, the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, in the general election. Demuth secured the Republican nomination by defeating business owner and MyPillow founder Mike Lindell.
For Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan won the Democratic primary.
South Carolina Senate Special Primary
In South Carolina, U.S. Senator Darline Graham qualified for an August 25 runoff election to compete for a full term in the U.S. Senate.
Graham was appointed to the Senate seat by Governor Henry McMaster in July 2026 to fill the vacancy created by the death of her brother, long-serving Senator Lindsey Graham.
Because no candidate achieved the required vote threshold to win the nomination outright on Tuesday, the top finishers advance to the runoff election later this month to finalize the candidate for the general election ballot.
