Pump Pain Returns As Gas Prices Snap Two-Week Losing Streak

After a brief window of relief at the pump, American drivers are once again facing higher costs to fill their tanks. According to the latest data from motor club AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline climbed to $4.03 today, marking the first time prices have moved upward in several weeks.

This shift ends a two-week stretch where costs had been steadily retreating from a peak of $4.17 seen earlier this month.

The sudden reversal highlights the ongoing volatility in the energy market, which has been under intense pressure for months. Since the start of the war, gas prices in the United States have surged by more than 30%.

While the national average sits just above $4, the financial burden is distributed unevenly across the country.

Drivers in the West and Pacific regions are seeing much higher figures; in states like California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, prices are currently hovering near or well above the $5-per-gallon mark, the highest levels recorded in the nation.

Industry analysts point to the high cost of crude oil as the primary driver of these fluctuations. Because crude oil typically accounts for about half of the price consumers see at the station, any shifts in global supply—often triggered by geopolitical instability—translate directly to the local pump.

While the two-week decline earlier this month suggested a cooling period, today’s data indicates that the downward trend has stalled as supply concerns continue to outweigh the impact of reduced demand.

For now, the $4 mark remains the new baseline for much of the country as the market struggles to find a steady floor.
