POLK COUNTY, Fla.- Polk County health officials are urging residents to be vigilant after a bat found in a Lakeland home tested positive for rabies. This marks the fifth confirmed case of rabies in the county this year.

On November 27th, a woman residing on Palm Drive West discovered a dead bat amongst her children’s toys. Sheriff’s Office Animal Control officers responded to the scene, collected the bat, and launched a rabies investigation.

The bat was sent to the State Laboratory in Tampa, where it was confirmed to be infected with the rabies virus. Fortunately, the family dog was vaccinated against rabies, but the homeowner is receiving preventative treatment for potential exposure.

“Luckily this family’s pet is vaccinated against this dangerous disease. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you come into contact with sick, injured, or deceased wildlife,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Health officials stress the importance of avoiding contact with wild animals and ensuring pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. If you suspect you or your pet may have been exposed to rabies, contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Section immediately at 863-577-1762.
