As breaking news unfolded regarding the United States’ military strike on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, millions of Americans turned to cable news for real-time updates, with Fox News Channel (FNC) securing the largest audience share across the television landscape.

According to data released by Nielsen Media Research, FNC’s breaking news coverage on Saturday, January 3, outpaced both cable rivals and major broadcast networks. The surge in viewership peaked during the 11:00 AM/ET hour as anchor Bret Baier led coverage of President Donald Trump’s address to the nation.

During the critical breaking news window from 11:15 AM to 12:45 PM/ET, Fox News delivered an average of 4.6 million total viewers. This figure placed the network well ahead of its closest competitor, ABC, which drew 2.4 million viewers during the same period. CNN followed with 2.2 million viewers, while NBC and CBS trailed with 1.6 million and 1.5 million viewers, respectively.

The data indicates a clear preference among viewers for FNC’s coverage during the geopolitical crisis. In the key demographic of adults aged 25-54—a metric highly valued by advertisers—Fox News secured 720,000 viewers, outperforming ABC (512,000), CNN (509,000), and NBC (378,000).

Viewership momentum began early in the day. FOX & Friends Weekend, airing from 6:00 to 10:00 AM/ET, featured an exclusive interview with President Trump and averaged 1.7 million viewers.

As the story developed, the audience grew significantly. Saturday in America, guest-anchored by Bryan Llenas at 10:00 AM, pulled in 3.7 million viewers, leading into Baier’s special report which averaged 4.5 million viewers.

Interest remained high into the afternoon. Fox News Live with Mike Emanuel delivered 3.1 million viewers between 12:45 PM and 2:00 PM/ET, while Fox Report with Jon Scott drew 2.2 million viewers from 2:00 to 5:00 PM/ET.

In contrast to the surge experienced by Fox, other networks faced headwinds. Notably, Tony Dokoupil’s early debut as anchor of the CBS Evening News on Saturday struggled to retain audiences. The broadcast delivered 2.5 million total viewers and 241,000 in the key demographic, representing a year-over-year decline of 38% in total viewers and 57% in the demo.

Nielsen Ratings Summary (11:15 AM – 12:45 PM/ET):
