PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning for Pasco County, signaling critical fire weather conditions that could lead to the rapid ignition and spread of wildfires. The warning is in effect until 6 P.M. today, November 11th.

The NWS alert says that a dangerous combination of low relative humidity and gusty winds is creating an extremely favorable environment for brush and wildland fires. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions and exercise extreme caution to prevent accidental fires.

What Does the Warning Mean?

A Red Flag Warning is the highest alert issued by the NWS regarding fire danger. It is reserved for when very low humidities (forecast as low as 27%), and strong winds (forecast to be north at 10 to 15 mph) are expected to combine, dramatically increasing the risk of fire and rapid fire spread.

Safety Measures and Burning Restrictions

County officials are strongly discouraging all outdoor burning during this period. Residents are reminded that simple actions can inadvertently spark a devastating fire.

Key Safety Reminders for Pasco County Residents:

  • Avoid Outdoor Burning: Do not start any open fires, burn yard debris, or use burn barrels. If you must use a grill or smoker, ensure the fire, flame, and heat are completely contained, and fully extinguish coals with water until they are cold to the touch.
  • Dispose of Smoking Materials Safely: Never toss a cigarette or match out of a vehicle or onto the ground. Ensure all smoking materials are completely extinguished in an appropriate receptacle.
  • Avoid Driving on Dry Grass: The hot underside of a vehicle, particularly the exhaust, can easily ignite dry grasses.
  • Be Vigilant: Stay aware of your surroundings and report any unattended fires or smoke immediately to 911.

The community is encouraged to be fire-aware and to do their part to ensure the safety of neighbors and property until the Red Flag Warning expires this evening.
