Vandals Target Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx Office as Debate Over Israel Aid Intensifies, Highlighting Deep Progressive Divides.
Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx campaign office was defaced with red paint and anti-Israel messages overnight Monday, igniting a fresh wave of controversy surrounding U.S. military aid to Israel. The incident occurred as tensions simmer within progressive circles over the complex issue of funding, with AOC’s voting record under scrutiny.
Authorities responded to a 911 call early Monday morning, discovering the Herschell Street office splattered with red paint and a stark sign accusing the congresswoman of “funding genocide in Gaza.” The vandalism underscores the volatile nature of the debate, particularly in the wake of Ocasio-Cortez’s recent vote on a defense appropriations bill.

On Monday afternoon, Ocasio-Cortez addressed the incident on X, firmly stating, “If you’re saying I voted for military funding, you are lying.” Her response comes amidst criticism, notably from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), regarding her vote against an amendment that would have blocked $500 million in funding for Israel’s Iron Dome program.
The amendment in question, introduced by Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, aimed to cut funding for Israeli missile defense systems within HR 8774, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for 2025.
While HR 8774 itself was not enacted, its provisions could be incorporated into other legislation. Greene’s amendment was overwhelmingly rejected by the House, with a vote of 6 in favor and 422 against.

Ocasio-Cortez’s “no” vote on Greene’s amendment effectively maintained the funding for the Iron Dome. However, she subsequently voted against the overall defense appropriations bill, which called for $832 billion in defense funding for fiscal year 2026. The DSA interpreted this as “voting against funding for the imperialist military-industrial complex and the Israeli genocide.”
Explaining her stance on X, Ocasio-Cortez stated, “Marjorie Taylor Greene’s amendment does nothing to cut off offensive aid to Israel nor end the flow of US munitions being used in Gaza. Of course I voted against it.” She further clarified that the amendment would “cut defensive Iron Dome capabilities while allowing actual bombs killing Palestinians to continue.”

This is not the first instance of Ocasio-Cortez facing criticism from progressives regarding Israel policy. In 2021, she drew attention for voting “present” on legislation providing $1 billion to support Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, an event that saw her visibly emotional on the House floor.
As the investigations into the vandalism continue, the incident highlights the deep divisions and passionate convictions surrounding U.S. foreign policy and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
