TAMPA, Fla. — Authorities in Hillsborough County have closed the net on a suspect nearly four years after a deadly shooting at a Tampa apartment complex. On Tuesday, deputies arrested 27-year-old Nekko Orta in connection with the murder of Bryce Green.
The investigation began on May 6, 2022, when deputies rushed to the Verra North Apartments on Skipper Road following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Green deceased at the scene.

While investigators initially filed charges in 2022, the path to an arrest was not immediate. The case underwent what officials described as an “extensive legal review” over the following years. The turning point came on November 7, 2024, when a Hillsborough County Grand Jury convened and returned an indictment charging Orta with First Degree Murder.
Following the indictment, a warrant was issued. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) coordinated with the U.S. Marshals Service to track Orta down, resulting in his capture on January 13, 2026.

Sheriff Chad Chronister credited the arrest to the persistence of the detectives involved.
“This arrest demonstrates our commitment to never giving up on victims and their families,” Sheriff Chronister said. “Even four years later, our detectives remained relentless, using every investigative tool available and working closely with our law enforcement partners to pursue justice. Their dedication and professionalism are what ultimately led to this arrest.”
Orta is currently in custody as the case moves to prosecution.
