U.S. Representative Byron Donalds announced a new statewide initiative on Friday aimed at increasing physical activity in Florida schools and giving parents more data on their children’s physical development.
The program, titled “Strong Kids, Strong Florida,” encourages schools to make physical activity a daily priority. It proposes the implementation of the Presidential Fitness Test, or an equivalent assessment, to give families a consistent measurement of their child’s physical health while maintaining student privacy and parental rights.
The announcement comes amid national data showing that more than 75% of children in the United States do not meet recommended daily physical activity levels, alongside rising rates of childhood obesity.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to build healthy habits that last a lifetime,” Donalds said in a statement. “‘Strong Kids, Strong Florida’ is about getting our kids moving again, supporting parents, and making sure Florida continues to lead the nation in education, health and opportunity. Together, we can raise a healthier, stronger generation of Floridians.”
The proposal relies on voluntary participation from local school systems. School districts that choose to opt into the program would be eligible for voluntary implementation grant funding.
Additionally, the plan introduces a new “Florida Elite Fitness Award.” This optional state-level award is designed to recognize students who exceed national physical fitness standards.
The initiative draws on recent federal efforts, building upon modern moves to restore the Presidential Fitness Test framework to public school physical education programs.
