Rep. Matt Gaetz on Monday said Special Counsel John Durham’s report proves federal agencies were “weaponized” against former President Donald Trump.
“The FBI and the Justice Department were weaponized, and Trump was specifically targeted … (and) targeted in a way no other American would be, the Fort Walton Beach Republican said during an appearance on Newsmax’s “The Right Squad.”
“In essence, the FBI has become a disinformation and election-interference enterprise here in our country,” Gaetz added. “It’s very damning for them.”

But Gaetz also said Durham’s findings are an “insufficient consequence for the malfeasance and corruption we have seen.”
Gaetz argued the government’s effort was an “operation” from beginning to end to fuse anti-Trump political opposition research generated by Democrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee with the intelligence and criminal justice processes.
“It’s a sad day in America,” Gaetz added, noting that if the parties were reversed, the report would have ended with “significant indictments” of those involved.
The result was that the FBI became “the enforcement wing of the Democratic Party to play offense against Trump,” said Gaetz.
Now, with Biden, the FBI are “the plumbers. They’re the dust busters. They’re the fixers. They’re the ones going in to deem any derogatory information about Joe Biden or Hunter Biden [as] Russian disinformation,” said Gaetz.

He referred to the “corrupt” letter signed by 51 former intelligence officials denouncing the October 2020 New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s nefarious laptop.
“It all weaves together, and it’s very ugly for our country, and it’s actually ugly for the future of a democracy where the people make the choice, not the law enforcement intelligence” agencies,” said Gaetz.

The conduct in 2016 and 2017 that Special Counsel Durham examined was the reason that current FBI leadership already implemented dozens of corrective actions, which have now been in place for some time. Had those reforms been in place in 2016, the missteps identified in the report could have been prevented. This report reinforces the importance of ensuring the FBI continues to do its work with the rigor, objectivity, and professionalism the American people deserve and rightly expect.
