The race for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Texas has taken a turn into a war of words, with Representative Jasmine Crockett alleging a coordinated effort by outside forces to sink her campaign’s finances.

During a Monday appearance on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” the Dallas-area congresswoman claimed that political operatives and media personalities based in New York and Washington, D.C., are actively working to “defund” her bid for the seat.

Crockett’s remarks come at a pivotal moment in the primary. A January survey conducted by Emerson College Polling and Nexstar Media showed her trailing state legislator James Talarico, with Talarico holding 47% of the support compared to Crockett’s 38%.

With 15% of voters still undecided, the congresswoman is framing the financial gap between the two candidates not as a lack of local interest, but as the result of a deliberate “choke-off” strategy managed from outside the state.

The friction reached a boiling point following comments from New York-based podcasters Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. On their show, “Las Culturistas,” the duo characterized donating to Crockett as a “waste” and encouraged their audience to direct their financial support elsewhere. Crockett pointed to these comments and other “peddled stories” in coastal media hubs as evidence that an operative linked to Talarico is trying to bypass Texas voters to influence the race through national donor circles.

While Talarico has significantly outpaced Crockett in both traditional fundraising and television advertising, Crockett maintains that her path to victory relies on an “unconventional” coalition.

She cited a University of Houston poll suggesting she holds an edge with independent and Republican-leaning voters. Her allies have defended her lower media-buy spending, arguing that traditional campaign structures and expensive TV blitzes were not designed for the type of grassroots movement she is building.

The congresswoman also pushed back against the narrative that she is unelectable on a statewide level. She noted that Republican Governor Greg Abbott has already directed over $1 million into advertisements targeting her—a move she interprets as a sign that the GOP views her as the more formidable general election opponent.

“Who spends a million dollars and didn’t even go after the people that are running against him?” Crockett asked, suggesting that Republican spending habits reveal their true concerns.

Despite the disparities in campaign coffers, the contest remains competitive. Talarico continues to blanket the state with a more traditional media presence, but Crockett is betting that her base will remain resilient against what she describes as an “orchestrated” attempt to dry up her resources before Texans even head to the polls.
