U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz said on Monday that the Justice Department is trying to air its “political grievance” with former President Donald Trump by appointing a special counsel with a clear left-wing tilt to investigate him.
As a consequence, said Gaetz, House Republicans should defund the “explicitly political” investigation into the former president.
Appearing on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast, Gaetz noted that the wife of Jack Smith, who will lead two probes into Trump, including his keeping a cache of classified documents as his Mar-a-Lago estate, is a prominent Democratic donor.
As The Free Press recently reported, Smith himself volunteered in 2010 to help the IRS hunt down conservative nonprofit groups that were targeted by the Obama administration for their political beliefs.
“You have to wonder whether or not at the Department of Justice if they even check these things, or if the bias is actually the point,” Gaetz told Bannon.
Gaetz noted that the appointment was “explicitly political” to begin with, as Attorney General Merrick Garland announced at the outset that he named a special counsel because Trump tossed his hat in the ring for 2024.

In that light, the Fort Walton Beach Republican suggested, it would seem common sense that in order to avoid the appearance of bias in the investigation the Justice Department would “shake the family tree” of the special prosecutor to see if “any virulent Trump haters, never Trumpers, [President Joe] Biden supporters fall out.”
Gaetz added that it was “deja vu all over again” because former Special Counsel Robert Mueller assembled a team of prosecutors with “well-demonstrated bias” against Trump to investigate claims, eventually revealed as phony, that Trump colluded with Russian operatives in 2016.
“That’s what we see in the poorest Third World countries on the planet Earth. It’s not what we should be seeing in the United States of America,” Gaetz said.
Gaetz said eradicating funding for Smith’s investigation would be appropriate if only because the Justice Department is shielding Hunter Biden from “documented crimes.”
“There is no standard here that would hold up to any reasonable, objective scrutiny,” said Gaetz.
“If the Department of Justice wants to play these games, we should not sit idly by as America is converted into Rwanda,” the congressman added. “Instead, we ought to fight back with the power of the purse.”
