Rep. Greg Steube slammed Democrats for moving to strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights while offering nothing that will make the country safer.
In an email to his constituents on Sunday, the Sarasota Republican said the Democratic majority’s “unconstitutional attempt to limit your rights will not stop mass shootings. It won’t even decrease gun violence.”
“All you have to do is look at the jurisdictions in America that have passed similar laws and their crime rights are higher than places like Florida where there is freedom,” Steube said.
“There is a moral decay in America that has been created by the Left and guns are not the cause of violence, violent people are the cause, and violent people have been created in record numbers by the systematic destruction of traditional families and values,” he continued.
“Attempting to take away our Constitutional rights, when 99.97% of 18-20-year-olds do not commit murder is a complete overreach and impacts adult American citizen(s) wishing to defend themselves.”

The email followed a House floor speech last week in which Steube scolded Democrats for politicizing the tragedies in Uvalde and Buffalo.
He noted, for instance, that Democrats did not produce any photos of the six victims murdered in Waukesha, Wisconsin, by a “domestic terrorist” who used his vehicle as a weapon.
“There are no cries to ban cars,” said Steube, “because that’s not on the left’s agenda. Banning guns is. And Democrats use these heinous crimes to further their long sought-after political objective of disarming Americans.”
Referring to that “moral decay,” the congressman noted that leftists have “torn down traditional institutions, took God out of our classrooms, and systematically destroyed the notion of traditional families and values.”
Steube then argued what has emerged as a favored talking point among conservatives: the fatherlessness crisis afflicting America.
Among those who come from homes with absent dads are 75 percent of school shooters, 72 percent of teenage murders, 60 percent of rapists, and 63 percent of teens who commit suicide.
He said Democrats don’t want to talk about that issue, or the nation’s “cultural rot” generally, because it does not achieve their political objective: disarming Americans.
Although the shooters in Buffalo and Uvalde were 18-year-olds, Steube argued they are outliers. He added that Democrats want to strip 18-to-20-year-olds of their Second Amendment rights when that demographic commits just 0.013 percent of homicides, including those without guns.
As for voting on the Democrats’ gun control bills, Steube asserted, “I urge my colleagues to stand for freedom, to stand for the Constitution, and to stand for the right of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.”
