A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals a significant wave of discontent among Democratic voters, with a strong majority expressing a desire for new leadership and a shift in party priorities.

The poll, conducted from June 11-16, found that 62% of Democrats believe the party’s leadership should be replaced, highlighting a deep disconnect between the issues voters prioritize and what they perceive their elected officials are focusing on.

The survey indicates that many Democrats feel their party is over-emphasizing issues such as transgender rights and electric vehicles, while not paying enough attention to pressing economic concerns. Voters are eager for their leaders to address “kitchen-table issues” like the cost of living and affordability, and to work towards reducing corporate influence.

“Voters are very impatient right now,” stated Mark Riddle, president of Future Majority, a Democratic research firm, to Reuters. “They want elected officials at all levels to address the cost of living, kitchen-table issues, and affordability.”

This sentiment is echoed even within the LGBTQ+ community. Benjamin Villagomez, who is trans, told Reuters that “there are more pressing issues” than transgender issues, stating, “There are more important things to be moving the needle on … things that actually matter to people’s livelihoods.”

Indeed, only 17% of Democrats polled said allowing transgender athletes to compete in women and girls’ sports should be a priority, yet 28% believe party leaders view it as a priority.

The poll’s findings align with a series of recent surveys that have shown growing disapproval of Democratic leadership and a pessimistic outlook among party members regarding their future. Some prominent Democrats have openly criticized the party for being too “weak and woke,” and concerns are mounting over the party’s ability to regain control of the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.

In contrast to the widespread dissatisfaction within the Democratic ranks, only 30% of Republicans surveyed felt they needed new leaders in their party.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 4,258 people nationwide and online, including 1,293 Democrats, and has a margin of error of approximately 3 percentage points for Democrats.

The results underscore a critical challenge for the Democratic Party as it looks towards the upcoming midterm elections: reconnecting with its base on core economic issues and demonstrating a clear path to addressing the financial struggles of everyday families.
