U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is among a handful of Republican lawmakers who want the Biden administration to answer accusations that the Pentagon suppressed a report about COVID-19 originating in a Chinese lab, with America’s help, and about possible cures to the virus.
In the letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Health and Human Services Department Secretary Xavier Becerra, and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky, Gaetz and the rest reference the work of Marine Corps Maj. Joseph Murphy, of the Office of Naval Research.
The watchdog group Project Veritas recently released a report supposedly prepared by Murphy for the Pentagon’s inspector general that discussed the coronavirus as a gain-of-function project endorsed by Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Fauci, under oath, has repeatedly denied the federal government participated in such research.
According to Project Veritas, Murphy’s report showed the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, actually rejected a project to study bat-related viruses in Wuhan, China, in 2018 because it was possibly outlawed gain-of-function research.
Gaetz and the other GOP lawmakers posed several questions to the Biden officials.
They want to know whether Murphy’s report was hidden in a top-secret computer drive to prevent its release, whether Fauci funded the project even after DARPA refused, whether there was any attempt to suppress potential “curatives” – such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine – and whether Fauci was part of an effort to mislead the American public about the “true” origins of the coronavirus.
DARPA declined to comment on the report, citing regulations that forbid it discussing its work, The Washington Times noted.
Murphy also declined to go beyond the report itself. But he did tell Project Veritas, “To those that seek answers I offer encouragement. There are good people striving for truth, working together in and out of government, and they succeed. … Don’t let a lie be our legacy to posterity.”
In their letter, Gaetz and the others wrote, “Answers to these questions are necessary to assign responsibility for a pandemic that has stolen the lives of many, deprived millions of schoolchildren of their education, and bankrupted small businesses.”
“Honest answers are a must, forming the basis for accountability and preparation for other crises that may arise,” they added. “We demand answers to restore faith in our institutions and organs of government, faith that has been tested by continued dissembling from those in charge. With honest, fact-based answers, we may collectively turn the page on this chapter of history and move forward.”
Besides Gaetz, the letter’s authors include GOP Reps. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, Bill Posey of Florida, Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee, Lisa McClain of Michigan, and Randy Weber of Texas.
