Rescuers Searching For Survivors After Surfside Building Collapse, 4 Dead 159 People Missing

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told reporters Friday morning that 159 people are still unaccounted for, and there are 4 confirmed deaths in the Surfside building collapse..

The building collapse is said to have occurred at around 2:00 am Thursday morning.

Thursday morning, CBS Miami said rescues of trapped residents were underway. Some may be stuck in the rubble, the station says, adding that firefighters are using truck-mounted ladders to reach people trapped on balconies.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue tweeted that it had more than 80 units there along with units from municipal fire departments. Miami Beach Police tweeted that “multiple police and fire agencies from across Miami-Dade” were assisting.

Governor DeSantis hosted a press conference on the site to provide an update about the disaster and ongoing state response efforts.

“They are in search and rescue mode, they are trying to identify survivors.  I know they have made contact with some and they are they’re doing everything they can to save lives and that is ongoing and they’re not going to rest,” said DeSantis.

ABC News tweeted out the video below of a boy being pulled from the rubble by Firefighters early Thursday morning.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told the Miami Herald that the cause of the collapse was still unknown.
