TAMPA, Fla. – A Tampa man has been arrested for bank robbery after his own mother called authorities and brought him to the sheriff’s office to turn himself in.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) announced the arrest of 33-year-old Aaron Spencer, who is accused of robbing the Truist Bank on Memorial Highway on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the HCSO, Spencer entered the bank at approximately 1:10 p.m. on October 9, 2025, and demanded money from the teller, implying he was armed with a pistol. He then fled the scene on foot after taking the money, discarding his clothing in a nearby parking lot.

The investigation took a sharp turn later that day when, at 4:38 p.m., a woman called HCSO’s 911 Communication Center. She identified herself as Spencer’s mother and stated that her son had just robbed a bank. She informed dispatchers that she was en route to the District III office with Spencer to turn him over to the authorities.

Spencer was formally arrested at 5:45 p.m. at the District III office and turned the stolen money over to detectives.

Spencer has been charged with Robbery with a Firearm while Wearing a Mask. Furthermore, authorities noted that Spencer was currently out on bond for a previous bank robbery that occurred in April 2025, which is related to a Tampa Police Department investigation.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister commended the mother’s actions.

“When someone’s own mother feels compelled to turn them in, it speaks volumes about accountability and the trust our community places in doing the right thing,” said Sheriff Chronister. “Her courage helped end a dangerous situation and reinforces the message that responsibility starts at home.”
