Trump’s endorsement follows Lara Trump’s decision to pass on a possible run, setting up a potentially costly battle against likely Democratic nominee Roy Cooper.
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Michael Whatley officially launched his campaign Thursday for the North Carolina Senate seat being vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Thom Tillis. The move comes after President Donald Trump endorsed Whatley and his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, decided against a run.
In a post on X, Whatley stated, “I am humbled and excited to begin this campaign, and I would be honored to earn your vote, your support, and your prayers.” His decision sets up a potentially expensive contest for the open seat.

The race is expected to be a top target for Democrats, who are likely to nominate former Governor Roy Cooper. Cooper, who has won six statewide elections, has already seen his campaign break fundraising records in its initial 24 hours. Democrats see North Carolina as a prime opportunity to gain a Senate seat in the upcoming midterm elections.
President Trump’s support for Whatley was announced last week in a social media post, where he also endorsed Florida state Sen. Joe Gruters to take over as RNC Chair.
Gruters currently serves as the RNC’s treasurer.
