Road Rage Shooting Leaves One Dead In Tampa; Self-Defense Claim Under Investigation

TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Police Department (TPD) is continuing its investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on Friday, November 14, stemming from a roadway dispute near E 5th Avenue and N 22nd Street.

The victim of the shooting has been identified as 41-year-old Dedrick Lamar Sykes.

Police responded to reports of a shot being fired around 7:10 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, later identified as Sykes, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to TPD, the incident began as a verbal argument between the two parties involved immediately preceding the shooting. The shooter, who has been identified as an adult male, remained on the scene and is cooperating with detectives.

The shooter claimed the action was taken in self-defense and, according to police, did not exhibit any signs of impairment during the initial investigation. The firearm allegedly used in the incident has been recovered.

The investigation continues.
