Robert De Niro became visibly emotional during a Monday appearance on the podcast “The Best People with Nicolle Wallace,” where he discussed his views on the current state of American politics and President Donald Trump.

The conversation shifted from De Niro’s professional philosophy to his personal concerns regarding the nation’s future, leading to a moment where both the actor and host Nicolle Wallace were moved to tears.

The exchange began when Wallace asked De Niro why he prioritizes “lifting up” those around him. De Niro responded by emphasizing the importance of unity, stating that a divided country is a “no-win situation.”

He then directed his focus toward Trump, characterizing the former president’s influence as a threat to the country’s stability. De Niro argued that it is the responsibility of the public to “protect the country,” suggesting that the current political direction could lead to significant damage.

During the interview, De Niro used urgent metaphors to describe the necessity of opposition, telling listeners they must “run through the fire” to ensure a way out of the current situation. Wallace expressed agreement with his perspective as the podcast concluded.

These comments follow a pattern of public criticism by the actor. In a March 2024 appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” De Niro stated he would refuse to play Trump in a film, citing a lack of redeemable qualities in the former president.

At that time, he also suggested that a Trump reelection could lead to the end of programs like Maher’s and result in unforeseen consequences for critics. Despite these warnings, Maher has continued to host his show while remaining a vocal critic of Trump, who has frequently issued his own public rebukes of the host in return.
