A Norfolk woman will spend the next 25 years in prison for her role in the brutal 2023 slaying of a disabled roommate who had been taken in by her family through their church. Kristie Marie Lynch, 46, was sentenced Friday, April 3, following her September 2025 conviction for the first-degree murder of 45-year-old Jose Luis Moreno.
The sentencing brings an end to a harrowing case that investigators say involved the prolonged torture of a vulnerable man. Moreno, who relied on a walker due to a disability affecting his ankles, moved in with Kristie and her husband, James Christian Lynch, in 2022.
While he contributed to the household using his Supplemental Security Disability Income, prosecutors revealed the living arrangement was defined by violence. James Lynch admitted the couple frequently “punished” Moreno physically for his inability to perform chores and for speaking his native Spanish.
The fatal encounter on August 9, 2023, began after Kristie Lynch claimed to her husband that Moreno had sexually assaulted her.

According to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney, she challenged her husband to “man up” and “go take care of your boy.”
What followed was a coordinated assault involving a frying pan, a baseball bat, a belt, and a dog leash.
While James Lynch claimed Moreno displayed “demon-like strength” during the struggle, forensic evidence told a grimmer story. Police discovered Moreno’s body two days later, tucked under a blanket at the bottom of a staircase.
He was naked, covered in cuts and bruises, and bore clear ligature marks on his neck from being strangled with the leash. Investigators also found blood spatter throughout the home and evidence of a failed attempt to scrub the crime scene clean.
Kristie Lynch was specifically accused of striking Moreno over the head with a frying pan during the attack. Her husband later told authorities he refused to seek medical help for the bleeding man because he feared being arrested.
“The sentencing of Mrs. Lynch completes a heartbreaking chapter in the life of the Moreno family. I am very sorry for them,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “Mr. and Mrs. Lynch had suffered abuse and adverse experiences in their own lives, but instead of using those experiences to show compassion to Mr. Moreno in his time of need, they victimized him and made him suffer before he died. They had no excuse, and now they must pay their price, both for what they have done and to protect our community from further harm at their hands.”
James Lynch, 52, previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is currently serving his own 25-year sentence.
