Rubio Blasts ‘Stupid’ Question As U.S. And Iran Trade Fire Amid Fragile Ceasefire

Tensions between Washington and Tehran reached a boiling point Friday as Secretary of State Marco Rubio bristled at media questioning regarding the stability of the current ceasefire. The exchange followed a high-stakes military encounter on Thursday in which U.S. and Iranian forces traded direct fire, including American missile strikes on an Iranian port city.

The confrontation began when a reporter asked Rubio how a ceasefire could remain in effect given the scale of the previous day’s violence.

Rubio characterized the incident as a purely defensive maneuver.

“What you saw yesterday was U.S. destroyers moving through international waters, being fired upon by the Iranians, and the U.S. responded defensively to protect itself,” Rubio said. He took care to distinguish the skirmish from broader military campaigns, noting, “That’s separate and distinct from Operation Epic Fury.”

Rubio became visibly frustrated when pressed on whether the ongoing exchange of fire fundamentally negated the truce. “If you fire a drone or a missile at our destroyer, what are we supposed to do, let it hit? We have to respond to it,” Rubio stated. “The alternative is to let it sink one of our ships. That’s crazy.”

When a reporter attempted to suggest there was “not much ceasing” in the firing, Rubio interrupted the query. “Well, you should ask that of the Iranians,” he shot back. “Don’t ask me—we didn’t fire, they fired on us. My point is, if you fire at a U.S. Navy ship, what are we supposed to do? Say, ‘Oh, there’s a ceasefire, we’re not going to shoot down your drone?’ That’s a stupid question. That’s a stupid position to take.” Rubio concluded the exchange by asserting that only “stupid countries” would decline to return fire, adding, “we’re not a stupid country.”

While the Secretary of State addressed the press corps, President Donald Trump offered a different tone on the escalation. In a Thursday interview, the President downplayed the severity of the retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets.

Trump described the American military response as a “love tap,” repeating the phrase twice during the conversation.

Despite the use of missile strikes, the President remained adamant that the diplomatic agreement remained intact. When asked directly if the ceasefire had collapsed, Trump replied, “No, no, the ceasefire is going. It’s in effect.”
