A routine stop at a Florida gas station turned fatal early Tuesday morning when a man running from federal law enforcement agents was struck and killed by a semi-truck on a nearby highway.
The incident unfolded just before 7:00 a.m. in the parking lot of a gas station and convenience store in St. Augustine. According to Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan, the 28-year-old victim, was one of four occupants in a vehicle that had pulled into the parking lot.
While at the gas station, the group had an encounter with agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). During the interaction, all four occupants suddenly fled the scene on foot.
One of the men darted directly across a busy roadway and into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.
“The driver of the semi stopped and tried to help the man,” Bryan said in an emailed statement. Despite those efforts, the man did not survive.
