Fox News senior strategic analyst Gen. Jack Keane appeared on Fox & Friends to analyze the Kremlin’s reaction to President Donald Trump’s call for the U.S. to resume nuclear testing, which has not occurred since 1992.
The discussion focused immediately on the stern message from Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who warned that “if someone abandons the moratorium, Russia will act accordingly.”
Analyzing the Nuclear Tensions
Gen. Keane, a retired four-star general, provided context for the escalating rhetoric. He noted that there has been long-standing “speculation for years” that Russia and China are secretly testing nuclear warheads. While the factual basis remains to be seen, Keane suggested that President Trump’s directive may be a reaction to recent announcements by Russia.
Russia recently confirmed that it is testing delivery systems—specifically, a cruise missile and an underwater drone called ‘Poseidon’—rather than the nuclear warhead itself. Keane proposed that the President could be reacting to this development.
Trump’s Goal: De-escalation
Despite the apparent escalation of tensions, Keane emphasized that President Trump’s underlying objective is not conflict. The President “wants to see a de-escalation” and a reduction of nuclear weapons, according to Keane.
Keane pointed out the hypocrisy from Russia and China in this process:
- President Trump has attempted to bring both China and Russia together to work toward nuclear reduction.
- China has “stiffed that process entirely.”
- Russia is actively “increasing their nuclear weapons, particularly their tactical nuclear weapons.”
Gen. Keane’s analysis concluded that “more to follow” is likely in this ongoing geopolitical standoff as the two nations navigate the future of nuclear weapon testing and arms control.
