Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine overnight Friday, firing 550 drones and missiles, including seven ballistic rockets, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 475 of the incoming projectiles, the widespread bombardment primarily targeted Kyiv, injuring at least 20 people and causing significant damage to residential buildings and rail infrastructure. The consular section of the Polish embassy in Kyiv was also reportedly damaged.

The intense barrage followed a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Trump stated yielded “no progress” toward ending the war.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, asserting that Putin “clearly demonstrates his complete disregard for the United States and all those who have called for an end to the war,” suggesting the attack was deliberately timed after the call. Sybiha reiterated calls for further sanctions on Moscow and increased defensive weapons for Kyiv.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski echoed the need for air defense resources, confirming that all staff at their damaged embassy were safe.

During his call with Trump, Putin reportedly insisted that Russia would not deviate from its original war objectives, including addressing the “root causes” it cites as justification for the invasion.

Trump expressed disappointment, stating, “I don’t think he’s looking to stop, and that’s too bad.”

The overnight assault marks a continuation of Russia’s intensified aerial campaign since the start of the year, with June seeing a record 5,337 Iranian-designed Shahed drones launched. The attacks come amidst reports that the Pentagon has halted shipments of promised air defense missiles to Ukraine due to concerns over dwindling U.S. weapon stockpiles. Ukrainian officials warn that such aid freezes only embolden Russia.

When questioned about the pause in aid, Trump affirmed that the U.S. is “giving weapons” but must “make sure we have enough for ourselves.”

Trump is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later today, with the halted weapons shipments high on the agenda. Kyiv is reportedly exploring options to purchase American weapons if military aid from Washington remains stalled.
