U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison on Wednesday, bringing an end to the legal saga surrounding his attempt to assassinate Donald Trump. The sentencing took place in the same courtroom where, five months earlier, Routh had to be tackled by marshals after attempting to stab himself with a pen following the reading of his guilty verdict.

Routh, now 60, was convicted on five federal counts stemming from the September 2024 incident at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. In addition to the life sentence for the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, Cannon imposed a consecutive seven-year sentence for a firearm conviction.

The path to today’s sentencing was marked by Routh’s erratic behavior and legal maneuvering. After a “disastrous” attempt to represent himself during the trial—which included meanderings on human history that drew multiple reprimands from the bench—Routh opted for professional counsel for the sentencing phase.

His new defense attorney, Martin L. Roth, argued for a 27-year sentence, citing Routh’s age and the claim that he would not be a threat to society in his eighties. However, Judge Cannon was unmoved, having previously characterized Routh’s courtroom antics and motions—including an offer to trade his life in a prisoner swap—as a “disrespectful charade.”

The prosecution’s request for life without parole was centered on Routh’s “near-total disregard for law” and his failure to take responsibility. According to the government’s sentencing memorandum:

  • Unrepentant Nature: Routh never apologized for the lives he put at risk.
  • Calculated Violence: Prosecutors reiterated that Routh spent weeks tracking plane movements and building a sniper’s nest.
  • Continued Hostility: Routh had previously authored a book encouraging foreign adversaries to target Trump.

The sentencing aligns with the Department of Justice’s stated commitment to punishing political violence. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi previously called the plot an “affront to our very nation itself.”

With today’s ruling, Judge Cannon ensured that Routh, who prosecutors said “plotted painstakingly to kill” the President, will remain in federal custody for the remainder of his life.
