SARASOTA, Fla. – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of April 2 in the 2100 block of 59th Street.
The incident began at approximately 6:25 p.m. when the agency’s Emergency Operations Bureau received a 911 call reporting a disturbance. Four patrol deputies arrived at the scene at 6:34 p.m. and located an adult male, later identified as 53-year-old Robert James Boast, seated behind a residence.
According to official reports, Boast removed a handgun from his waistband upon making contact with the deputies. Authorities stated that deputies issued clear verbal commands for Boast to drop the weapon. The subject then pointed the firearm in the direction of one of the deputies.
In response to the immediate threat, two deputies discharged their agency-issued firearms. Following the shooting, deputies rendered first aid until Sarasota County Fire Rescue personnel arrived.

Boast was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
Records indicate that Boast was arrested on an outstanding Manatee County warrant for Violation of Pretrial Release: Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.
Investigators have obtained a search warrant for the residence. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident remains an active and ongoing investigation.
