SARASOTA, COUNTY, Fla. – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is actively investigating a deputy-involved shooting that took place this morning at the Saratoga Place at Palmer Ranch complex, located at 5050 Central Sarasota Parkway.

The incident unfolded after the Emergency Operations Bureau received a distressing 911 notification at 8:53 a.m. from a caller who was threatening to harm himself.

Deputies from the Patrol Bureau were immediately dispatched to the scene, with the first deputy arriving at 9:05 a.m. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the subject outside of the residence.

According to the SCSO, the subject was armed with a kitchen knife. The deputy issued multiple verbal commands instructing the subject to drop the weapon. The subject reportedly failed to comply, instead pointing the knife at the deputy and advancing toward the law enforcement officer.

In response to what the SCSO described as an imminent threat, the deputy discharged their firearm, stating they “had no option but to respond with deadly force to protect himself.”

Other responding deputies immediately rendered aid to the injured subject until the Sarasota County Fire Department arrived on the scene. The individual was then transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where they are currently being treated for their injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no SCSO member was injured during the incident.
