Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Clears Backpack After Bomb Threat Near Mall Drive

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a reported bomb threat.

SARASOTA, Fla. – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a reported bomb threat situation.

Deputies at approximately 7:30 pm, an unknown male suspect got into a verbal altercation with patrons at Hurricane Mike’s bar.

While exiting the establishment he made several statements about having a bomb in his backpack.

This prompted several calls to 911. The Sarasota Sheriff’s Office quickly responded, identified the suspect, and took him into custody.

The backpack was left in the middle of the road near Mall Drive and Gateway Avenue. The immediate area was cleared as well as some nearby establishments.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office Hazardous Device Unit examined the backpack and cleared the scene just after 9:30 pm Wednesday.

The intersection of Mall Drive and Gateway Avenue is now open.
