A rash of fraudulent phone calls and text messages has prompted an official warning from the Sheriff’s Office, as scammers increasingly pose as law enforcement and jail officials to swindle local residents out of cash.
According to authorities, the criminals are masking their identities by using the names of real law enforcement officers. They typically contact potential victims with urgent, high-pressure claims—ranging from missed jury duty to fabricated or real ongoing criminal cases—in an effort to extort money.
Investigating deputies noted that these schemes often rely on sophisticated deception, including the use of forged court documents and fake notices regarding traffic or criminal infractions. In some instances, the scammers are specifically targeting individuals who are already facing legitimate criminal charges, exploiting their existing legal vulnerabilities.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that government entities do not operate this way. A primary red flag for these operations is the requested method of payment; the impostors routinely demand funds via Bitcoin, other forms of cryptocurrency, or retail gift cards.
To combat the trend, officials are urging the community to exercise extreme caution when receiving unexpected financial demands. If anyone receives a call or text asking for money from a purported law enforcement agency, government organization, utility company, bank, or credit card firm, the directive is clear: hang up immediately and contact the organization directly using a publicly verified phone number.
The same rule applies to frantic digital messages from loved ones. If a resident receives a distressing message from a family member or friend claiming they need money immediately, authorities advise contacting that person directly to verify the situation before sending any funds.
