The suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel by ABC has escalated into a political firestorm, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) demanding the ouster of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair Brendan Carr.

Schumer’s call came after Carr’s public comments and warnings to the network and its affiliates preceded the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The controversy began after Kimmel’s monologue on Monday, in which he discussed the recent assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk and criticized those he said were trying to characterize the accused killer as anything other than a supporter of the “MAGA gang.”

Following the remarks, Carr stated on a podcast that ABC and its affiliated stations could face “additional work for the FCC ahead” if they didn’t take action against Kimmel.

Nexstar Media Group, which owns numerous ABC affiliate stations, was the first to preempt the show, citing Kimmel’s comments as “offensive and insensitive.” ABC later announced its own indefinite suspension of the program.

Schumer quickly seized on Carr’s role in the matter, taking to social media to call for his resignation. “What Brendan Carr is doing is despicable,” Schumer wrote, accusing the FCC chair of “intimidating and threatening” networks and individuals.

He went on to call Carr “one of the greatest threats to free speech America has ever seen” and urged President Trump to fire him if he refused to step down.

However, under the Biden administration, censorship of anyone center-right or right was widespread, including the Tampa Free Press.

We are still banned on Reddit (try dropping a link from a TFP story, even a missing child, and Reddit immediately removes it, site-wide. This punishment was for publishing a true story about the Nashville school shooter, Audrey Hale, and placing the link in r/Conservatives. This happened on November 6, 2023.

Some other examples and claims include:

  • Social Media “Censorship”: The most prominent claims involve the Biden administration’s communications with social media companies like Facebook (now Meta) and Twitter (now X) regarding content moderation.
    • Republicans have accused the administration of “coercing” or “significantly encouraging” platforms to remove or suppress what they deemed “misinformation,” particularly related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 election.
    • Documents and testimony from congressional hearings have revealed communications where White House officials expressed frustration with platforms for not taking down certain content, including humor and satire, and posts questioning vaccine efficacy.
    • This has led to lawsuits, such as Murthy v. Missouri, in which states with Republican attorneys general and social media users alleged that the administration’s actions violated the First Amendment. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that the plaintiffs lacked standing to sue, but the case highlighted the ongoing debate.
  • Targeting of News Outlets: Some Republicans have also alleged that government agencies, such as the Department of State, have worked to “censor, deplatform, and demonetize” American media outlets that the government disfavored.
    • A lawsuit filed by the Texas Attorney General on behalf of media companies like The Daily Wire and The Federalist claimed that the government used “tools of warfare—information warfare—which were developed in the context of national security” against domestic political opponents.
    • These accusations have been tied to reports that the State Department funded a group that was allegedly “blacklisting conservative media outlets.”
